After intercepting Mr. Football candidate Kofi Hughes on top-ranked defending Class 4A state champ Indianapolis Cathedral’s opening possession of the 4A southern semistate played before 10,000-plus fans Nov. 20 at Reitz Bowl in Evansville, No. 6 host Evansville Reitz rode the momentum of a 49-yard flea flicker all the way to a stunning 31-10 victory.
Reitz QB Matt McIntosh – the younger brother of 2007 Mr. Football Paul McIntosh – went 11 of 14 for 251 yards with three touchdowns and ran for another score as the Panthers moved closer to their second 4A title in three years. Meanwhile, a shoulder injury limited Irish QB Hughes to receiver-only duty in the second half as backup Connor Barthel stepped in.
Reitz will face the winner of Saturday’s 4A northern semistate battle between No. 7 host Lowell – whom Reitz defeated two years ago for the championship – and No. 2 undefeated Fort Wayne Dwenger (the victim of Cathedral last season).
